The Empyrean Project
An Exploration of Sacred Psychology
The Empyrean Project is an attempt to envision a new way to learn and practice spirituality. Without any preconceptions or assumptions about what is sacred, or why, we are building a new framework for the spiritual journey, from the ground up. Starting with some basic insights about what humans experience and meaningful and intrinsically valuable, the Empyrean Deck models how these basic themes intersect and interact through mythology, psychology, as well as institutional and informal religious traditions. Simply by using the deck, you are learning a specific and practical metaphysical model: a modern version of the non-dual Idealism of the Perennial Philosophy. I call this model Sacred Psychology.
What Is Sacred Psychology?
Sacred Psychology is a mystical philosophy based on the wisdom traditions, sacred and secular, from around the world. Its foundation is the Perennial Philosophy, and its application is the joyful appreciation of all that is good and meaningful in human life. For a number of reasons, I have used the ideas and texts of the Neo-Daoist text tradition (Dao De Jing, Zhuangzi, and the I Ching) as the framework for the project. But no prior familiarity with, or commitment to, its teachings are necessary. If you are looking for ways to infuse gratitude, wonder, and a sense of purpose into your life, there are many resources here that may help.
